Microsoft may be preparing to move away from physical games with its next Xbox console, according to insider Jez Corden, who shared new information during the Xbox Two podcast. He believes Project Helix is unlikely to include a built in disc drive, and the company is reportedly considering ending support for physical games altogether.

Corden also pointed to Xbox's silence following PlayStation's decision to phase out physical discs. In his view, the lack of any public response could indicate that Microsoft is evaluating a similar direction.

«The fact that Xbox hasn't done anything to capitalize on it yet probably says it all», Corden said.

He added: «I still think there's very little chance that Helix will have a disc drive natively because I just think the economics of having a company that prints discs have become unviable.»

The insider noted that he had previously reported Project Helix was never intended to include a disc drive. However, journalist Tom Warren later claimed that Microsoft had not yet made a final decision on the matter.

Despite the reports, many Xbox fans hope Project Helix will take a more PC like approach by supporting an external disc drive instead of including one by default. Microsoft is also reportedly testing a feature that would convert physical game copies into digital licenses, which could help ease the transition away from discs.
