Today marks the 39th anniversary of the original Metal Gear, the game that launched one of the most influential stealth action franchises in gaming history. Created by Hideo Kojima, it was released on July 13, 1987, for the Japanese MSX2 computer.
Unlike most action games of its era, Metal Gear focused on stealth instead of direct combat. Players took control of Solid Snake, who had to infiltrate an enemy base, avoid detection, and complete a dangerous mission, introducing a groundbreaking gameplay concept for its time.
The game laid the foundation for a legendary series that later expanded with titles such as Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
Metal Gear went on to shape the stealth action genre for decades, while Hideo Kojima established himself as one of the most influential and celebrated game designers in the industry's history.
