Golmud Railway, originally introduced in Battlefield 4 as the largest map at launch, is returning in Battlefield 6 with a major overhaul. Level designer Luka Grepl-Malmgren stated that the team now has far more advanced technology compared to over a decade ago. He also noted that two of the original artists are still working at the studio, making the update a collaborative effort that blends experience with modern capabilities. The goal was not only to recreate the classic map but also to implement ideas that were previously impossible.

The map still features a wide range of ground and air vehicles, including buggies, tanks, helicopters, and jets. One of its defining elements remains the train in Conquest mode. In the original version, it moved toward the controlling team’s base and was equipped with turrets. The map also included destructible elements that created craters and affected vehicle movement. In tactical modes, a central village played a key role, gradually being destroyed during battles while rooftops served as sniper positions.

In Battlefield 6, these features have been redesigned. The train now includes multiple carriages with cover, parkour opportunities, and additional locomotives at both ends. Its route has also been changed, and it now moves toward the enemy base, significantly altering the flow of combat.

According to the developer, this change was made because in Battlefield 4 the train often stayed in one area and had limited impact on gameplay. In the new version, it is easier to intercept, and the controlling team gains a valuable spawn point closer to enemy positions.

The aerial aspect of the map has been greatly expanded and is now the largest among Battlefield 6 multiplayer maps. This allows pilots to engage in combat across mountain ranges, valleys, and glacier-covered areas.

On the ground, the team addressed the issue of open spaces by adding natural cover such as stone barriers and vegetation. This improves infantry mobility and makes movement without vehicles less punishing.

As a result, each key area now feels more distinct and separated, meaning that controlling one objective no longer guarantees dominance over the entire map.
