Dan Hay, executive producer of the upcoming StarCraft shooter, shared several details about Blizzard's newly announced project during an interview with South Korean journalists.

Hay confirmed that the team is not developing StarCraft as a live service game. Instead, the project is planned as a premium shooter with a complete narrative featuring an introduction, a climax, and an epic conclusion that will leave no major story questions unanswered.

Players will create their own character at the beginning of the game, give them a name, and develop them throughout the campaign. The game will also feature a large open world with a strong focus on player freedom and choice. If a character is not powerful enough to tackle a particular mission, players will be able to explore easier areas, gain experience, upgrade their equipment, and return to the mission later.

The story will take place roughly 70 years after the events of StarCraft 2, and that time gap will play an important role in shaping the narrative. According to Hay:

Factions that looked a certain way in the past could have changed their views over 70 years, disagreed with each other, or split apart. These changes provide room for new stories.

The game's planned 2030 release means there is still plenty of time for Blizzard to change its vision. While the lack of a live service focus may sound promising amid the industry's recent string of live service failures, it is still too early to know whether the final game will follow the current plan.

Another intriguing detail concerns the game's music. Mick Gordon, best known for his work on DOOM (2016), DOOM Eternal, and the modern Wolfenstein series, shared the StarCraft trailer without any comment. This could potentially hint at his involvement in the game's soundtrack.
