Chris Avellone questions whether Bethesda can deliver a remaster of Fallout New Vegas. According to him, the main obstacle is the lack of access to the game’s source code.
Avellone says that near the end of development Obsidian offered to sell the code to Bethesda for 10 thousand dollars, which would have effectively given the company full control over the project. However, the deal apparently never happened, leaving Bethesda without the necessary code.
He argues that creating a remaster without the source code is impossible. Avellone also noted that former Obsidian head Feargus Urquhart refused to hand over the code even when additional financial incentives were discussed. As a result, the code may now be lost or only exist in a fragmented state.
Given these circumstances, Avellone believes Bethesda cannot re-release the game as a remaster. The only viable option would be a full remake, but that would require significant investment.
At the same time, part of the community points to approaches similar to Oblivion Remastered, where modern visuals are layered over the original game. However, Avellone insists that even in such cases, access to the source code remains essential.
