id Software has revealed new details about Revelations, the first and likely only expansion for DOOM: The Dark Ages, which launches on July 7. The information was shared by DOOM game director Hugo Martin and id Software studio director Marty Stratton during an interview with IGN.
According to the developers, the DLC will take around 10 to 12 hours to complete, making it roughly half the length of the main campaign. Revelations is designed to be more challenging than the base game, so players are encouraged to finish the original story first. Around 40% of the expansion's playtime will be spent tackling optional combat arenas aimed at experienced players.
The team also confirmed that the expansion features a Metroidvania inspired level design. Players will unlock new abilities and equipment throughout the campaign, allowing them to revisit earlier areas and access previously unreachable locations. One of the biggest highlights is that the DOOM Slayer will venture through a frozen version of Hell, although its demonic inhabitants remain just as ruthless.
The expansion introduces a new primary weapon, the Chain Spear, replacing the shield from the main game. It can be used for sweeping melee attacks, thrown at enemies, and even to block incoming strikes and deflect projectiles. The developers have also created numerous unique glory kills specifically for the new weapon.
Another addition is the Arch-vile, a classic enemy from Doom II. This version no longer resurrects fallen demons but instead summons fresh ones into battle.
Revelations includes six new locations connected by Purgatory, a central hub where players can upgrade their equipment and prepare for upcoming encounters.
Several gaming outlets have also released gameplay footage showcasing the Chain Spear, the new environments, and other features included in the expansion.
Like the base game, DOOM: The Dark Ages Revelations will be available on PC via Steam and Battle.net, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series.
