Just over a week after the launch of the new Steam Machine console, the first reports of serious technical issues have begun to surface online. One early adopter encountered a critical hardware failure that the community has already nicknamed the "Red Line of Death," drawing comparisons to the infamous Xbox 360 hardware issue.
The problem was first reported by Reddit user me_hill in a dedicated discussion thread and was later highlighted by the analysts at Digital Foundry. According to the owner, they managed to play No Man's Sky for only five minutes before installing an available system update, after which the console became completely unusable.
Steam's official support documentation confirms the severity of the issue. The console's front LED indicator is designed to display various hardware errors, and a flashing red light on the right side specifically indicates a GPU failure. For Steam Machine owners, this represents one of the worst possible hardware faults, as repairing the console in such a case may prove impossible.
At the moment, this appears to be an isolated incident, with no widespread reports of the same problem. Many customers are still waiting to receive their consoles, as orders continue to be fulfilled. The affected owner also encouraged those still awaiting delivery to remain optimistic, noting that Valve will likely address the issue in future hardware revisions or updates.
