Developer 4A Games and publisher Plaion unveiled a new gameplay trailer for Metro 2039 during the Xbox Showcase presentation.
The game is scheduled for release in winter 2027, with launch currently expected in February 2027. Developers from the Ukrainian studio 4A Games revealed that an earlier version of the project was canceled and postponed in 2022 following the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
In Metro 2039, players will take control of a mysterious outsider from beyond the Metro system who is forced to venture into the city and confront Hunter.
Known from the original Metro trilogy — the very character who once set Artyom on his journey—Hunter returns many years later in a dramatically different role. He has become the Führer of the New Reich, a fascist uprising that has reshaped the world surrounding the Moscow Metro.
Based on the footage shown, a significant portion of the game will take place above ground among the ruins of Moscow and its surrounding areas. The developers promise extensive opportunities to explore both surface and underground locations, along with an updated arsenal that combines new equipment with the classic weaponry familiar to Metro fans.
The trailer suggests a darker and more ambitious chapter for the franchise, with a stronger focus on open exploration while maintaining the atmospheric survival gameplay that has defined the series.
As previously reported, Bloober Team recently announced the psychological thriller Star Trek: Shadow Frontier.
