In the United States, 24-year-old gamer Axel Melendez was left paralyzed following an incident that he claims resulted from a swatting attack stemming from a dispute in Rust. The victim and his mother have filed a lawsuit against the local county and sheriff's department, seeking $176 million in damages.

According to court documents, the conflict began during a Rust gaming session. Unknown perpetrators convinced Melendez to grant them remote access to his computer under the pretext of an "anti-cheat check." Once they gained control of his PC and accounts, they began extorting money and threatening him with swatting—making a false emergency report about a severe, dangerous crime.

Recognizing the severity of the threats, Melendez proactively contacted 911 to warn authorities about a potential hoax. According to him, the dispatcher assured him that law enforcement would not dispatch specialized units based on an anonymous report of that nature, telling him there was no need to worry.

Less than 48 hours later, however, the hackers placed a fake emergency call alleging an active shooting inside the gamer's home. Officers arrived at the residence and began attempting to breach the house by breaking a bedroom window.

The plaintiff states that, unaware of who was attempting to force entry into his home, he grabbed a legally registered handgun belonging to his mother. Upon seeing the firearm, officers opened fire, discharging eight rounds. Two bullets struck Axel, causing broken ribs and critical spinal cord damage, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down.

Axel Melendez and his mother are currently seeking $176 million in compensation, accusing law enforcement of negligence and breach of duty. The lawsuit alleges that the police ignored the prior warning regarding potential swatting and failed to account for that information when responding to the fake emergency call.

This case once again highlights the severe dangers of swatting—a criminal practice increasingly used to intimidate gamers and streamers. False reports of high-stakes crimes can lead to tragic real-world consequences, particularly when law enforcement lacks context or fails to incorporate prior warnings into their tactical response.

As a reminder: Razer announced the acquisition of assets of the live streaming platform StreamElements.
