On November 7, 2006, Gears of War was released on Xbox 360 — the debut game of a new franchise from Epic Games, which became one of Microsoft's console's main trademarks. The project combined a large-scale science fiction plot, a dark atmosphere, cinematic presentation, and a cover mechanic that later became a standard for many shooters.

The game told the story of humanity's struggle against the Locust Horde — a race of creatures that emerged from beneath the surface of the planet Sera. The main character was Marcus Fenix — a soldier of the Coalition of Ordered Governments, who, together with the Delta Squad, had to embark on one of the most dangerous missions of the war.

How Epic Games Created Gears of War

Before Gears of War, Epic Games was primarily known for the Unreal series and the development of Unreal Engine. The new project was intended to demonstrate the capabilities of next-generation technology and show what the Xbox 360 was capable of.

Cliff Bleszinski — the lead designer of the original Gears of War.

One of the key figures in the development was designer Cliff Bleszinski. Epic Games aimed to create not just another shooter, but a game in which moving between cover, team interaction, and choosing the right position would be important components of combat.

Gears of War became the first console game to use Unreal Engine 3. The technology allowed the developers to create detailed lighting, large-scale locations, and a cinematic presentation that was particularly impressive compared to other projects of the time.

The World of Sera and the War Against the Locust

The events of the game take place on the planet Sera, where humanity has been fighting for survival for many years. After Emergence Day — the day when the Locust emerged onto the surface — civilization found itself on the brink of destruction.

Marcus Fenix was already a renowned soldier before the main events began, but he ended up in prison after failing to follow orders. He is released after a new large-scale Locust offensive and joins Delta Squad.

Together with Dominic Santiago, Augustus Cole, and Damon Baird, Marcus receives a mission that gradually turns into an attempt to deliver a decisive blow against the Locust army.

The story was important not only because of the conflict itself. Epic Games placed an emphasis on the relationships between the members of the squad. The characters' jokes, arguments, and personal tragedies helped make Delta Squad not just a group of soldiers, but a team that players wanted to follow.

Cover Became Part of the Genre

One of the main features of Gears of War was its cover system. The player could take cover behind walls and other objects, move between them, fire from a safe position, and quickly change cover.

Unlike many earlier shooters, where combat was based on constant movement through open spaces, Gears of War forced players to pay close attention to their positioning. Leaving cover at the wrong moment could quickly end a battle.

A special place was occupied by the Lancer — an assault rifle with a chainsaw bayonet. It became one of the main symbols of the franchise and one of the most recognizable elements of Gears of War.

Multiplayer

An important part of the game was its multiplayer mode through Xbox Live. Players could compete against each other and use the cover system in battles against real opponents.\

Gears of War also allowed players to complete the campaign cooperatively. This became an important part of the game's experience, as two players could go through the story together and coordinate their actions during battles.

In December 2006, Microsoft reported that more than 1 million unique players had already played Gears of War through Xbox Live, participating in around 10 million online sessions in total.

Success After Release

Even before its release, Gears of War was one of the most anticipated games of 2006. Microsoft actively promoted the project, and after its release, it quickly became one of the Xbox 360's biggest hits.

Just six weeks after its release, the game had sold more than 2 million copies worldwide. Microsoft called it the fastest-selling next-generation game at the time and the fastest-selling Xbox exclusive.

A few weeks later, sales exceeded 3 million copies. Thus, Gears of War became the fastest-selling Xbox 360 game at the time.

The success was also important for Epic Games. The studio simultaneously demonstrated the capabilities of Unreal Engine 3, which other major companies began licensing. Thus, Gears of War became a kind of showcase for technology that was used in subsequent games across the industry.

Impact on the Industry

Gears of War was not the first game to feature cover mechanics, but it was the game that made such a system one of the main elements of modern third-person shooters.

After the project's success, cover-based mechanics began to be actively used by other developers. At the same time, Gears of War showed that a console shooter could be more than just an adaptation of traditional PC mechanics, but a game designed with the characteristics of a controller and a large screen in mind.

The technical side was also important. Gears of War demonstrated the capabilities of Unreal Engine 3 and helped establish a visual standard for next-generation games.

The Beginning of a Major Franchise

Following the success of the first game, Epic Games continued the story of Marcus Fenix. Gears of War 2 was released in 2008, while Gears of War 3 followed in 2011.

The franchise gradually expanded, gaining new characters, storylines, and additional projects. After Microsoft acquired the rights to the series from Epic Games, The Coalition took over the development of the franchise.

The original Gears of War later received an updated version, Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, which was released on Xbox One and Windows.

The Legacy of Gears of War

Today, Gears of War remains one of the most important franchises in Xbox history. The first game became a symbol of the early Xbox 360 era, demonstrated the capabilities of Unreal Engine 3, and helped popularize cover mechanics in shooters.

Its success also showed that a new original franchise could quickly become one of the platform's major brands. For Epic Games, Gears of War was not simply a successful game, but a project that shaped the direction of the studio's development and left a significant mark on the history of console shooters.

On November 7, 2026, Gears of War marks 20 years since its first release.
