Legendary game developer id Software, best known for the DOOM, Wolfenstein, RAGE, and Quake franchises, has lost approximately half of its workforce.

The layoffs were publicly confirmed by former Senior Gameplay Systems Programmer Michael Maynard, who spent 21 years at id Software. In a post on LinkedIn, he revealed that he was laid off alongside nearly half of the studio's employees.

Maynard, who has more than 40 years of experience in the video game industry, said the news did not come as a major surprise. However, he expressed deep disappointment that id Software — long regarded as a pioneer and leading innovator in the FPS genre — has now become the subject of a routine corporate restructuring.

The workforce reduction comes amid the previously announced wave of layoffs that affected approximately 3,200 positions across Microsoft's gaming division.
