Jason Momoa has exited Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions’ upcoming film adaptation of Helldivers. The reason for his departure has not been officially disclosed, although reports suggest it may be related to the actor’s busy filming schedule.
Despite losing its original lead star, the project remains in active development. Sony is currently searching for a replacement and has not changed the movie’s planned release date. The film is still scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 10, 2027.
The adaptation is being directed by Justin Lin, best known for his work on the Fast & Furious franchise. Plot details remain under wraps.
The original Helldivers launched in 2015 as a cooperative shooter where players joined an elite military unit tasked with defending Super Earth from intergalactic threats. Its sequel, Helldivers 2, became one of PlayStation’s biggest recent successes, selling more than 12 million copies across PS5 and PC within its first four months after launching in 2024. The game has since expanded to Xbox as well.
The film is being produced by Hutch Parker, PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash, and Justin Lin through Perfect Storm Entertainment.
Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions have previously collaborated on several successful game adaptations, including Uncharted starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, the Twisted Metal series, and HBO’s award-winning The Last of Us.
