Santa Monica Studio creative director Cory Barlog officially confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 that the next God of War game, which will once again feature Kratos as the main protagonist, will be released after God of War Laufey. The new project will be directly connected to Laufey's story.

There are currently no details regarding the next Kratos game. The developers have not revealed the title, setting, target platforms, or an estimated release date.

As for God of War Laufey, the game has received an exact release date — February 16, 2027. According to Barlog, this project is a continuation of previous events and serves as a massive foundation for the franchise's future. He also noted that the game will expand the world with unexpected characters (specifically mentioning a hero named Phranque, who "has been around since the beginning") and will set the stage for "something amazing."

The first look at God of War Laufey was presented at the June State of Play as a 20-minute gameplay video. The demonstration began with the scene of Kratos and Atreus burning Faye's body (events from the 2018 game), after which Kratos briefly appears to help Faye during her short imprisonment. It remains unknown whether Kratos will make other appearances in the game, as chronologically he is busy with the events of Ragnarök.

Early reaction from the gaming community to Laufey was mixed. Players highly praised the combat system and visuals, but criticized the simplified gameplay in the introductory section and the absence of Kratos at the center of the plot.

To reassure fans, Santa Monica Studio representatives emphasized Kratos's importance to the franchise. On the studio's official X account, developers stated that Kratos remains the God of War and that there are many more stories ahead with him. This position was supported by Cory Barlog and a developer named Lawrence, highlighting that Kratos games will always exist and they simply "can't not tell stories about the big guy."

Additionally, Santa Monica Studio announced a remake of the original Greek God of War trilogy (games released in 2005, 2007, and 2010). This project is guaranteed to bring Kratos back into the spotlight; however, development is in its very early stages, so no release dates have been announced yet.
