The collaboration between Nintendo and Illumination continues. According to an updated release schedule on Universal Pictures’ Spanish website, a new joint project is set to premiere on April 12, 2028.
In official documents, the project is listed as an “untitled Illumination / Nintendo event film.” While plot details remain undisclosed, analysts and insiders suggest it could be a long-awaited standalone movie about one of Nintendo’s most iconic video game characters.
The most likely candidate for the lead role is Donkey Kong. This speculation stems from the fact that last summer Nintendo and Universal jointly filed a copyright application for a separate project centered on the character.
Given the box office success of the The Super Mario Bros. Movie franchise, the release of a third collaborative film seems вполне logical. The combined global box office revenue of the two Mario films has already surpassed $2 billion.
