Musashi's adventure in a corrupted Kyoto takes him through numerous battles, supernatural encounters, and important story moments. With 22 main missions and a large amount of optional content, it can be useful to have a complete list of objectives in one place.

This guide covers every main mission in Onimusha: Way of the Sword, as well as the game's side quests and additional activities. The missions are presented in their progression order, making the list useful both for players focused on the story and those working toward 100% completion.

Main Missions

There are 22 main missions in Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Together, they form the game's primary storyline and take Musashi across several major areas of Kyoto.

The campaign starts with the events at Rendaino and gradually introduces more dangerous locations and challenges. Since the main story follows a mostly linear progression, players generally won't have to worry about choosing the wrong mission order.

The complete main mission list is:

  1. The Ruckus at Rendaino
  2. The Stage is Set at Kiyomizu
  3. Kyoto, Corrupted
  4. The Oni's Apprentice
  5. Careful What You Wish For
  6. The Curse of Kiyomizu-zaka Slope
  7. A Strength in Refuge
  8. Patching Up the Pouch
  9. Windswept Kenin-ji
  10. An Immortal Talent
  11. What Lurks in the Shadows
  12. The Roots of All Evil
  13. Bloodbath of the Bridge
  14. Shadows Fall
  15. A Tempest at the Temple
  16. To Live is to Suffer
  17. Okuni's Kabuki Dance
  18. The Demon on the Mount
  19. A Haunted Distraction
  20. Storm Chaser
  21. In the Light of an Icy Moon
  22. The Clash at Rendaino

The final mission is The Clash at Rendaino. Starting this quest marks the game's point of no return, so it is best to deal with any unfinished optional activities beforehand.

Players pursuing a completionist run should use this mission as their final checkpoint. Finish remaining side quests, mysteries, and collectibles before proceeding with the ending.

Side Quests and Optional Content

The main storyline is not the only way to spend time in Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Kyoto contains numerous optional activities that allow Musashi to meet additional characters, investigate unusual situations, and earn rewards.

Among the available content are Mysteries of Kyoto, Chance Encounters, and other optional missions. New activities can appear as the story advances, which makes it worthwhile to check the map from time to time.

Optional quests also provide additional context for Kyoto and its inhabitants. Musashi can encounter people with their own problems and investigate unusual incidents rather than simply following the main storyline.

The side quest list includes:

  1. Pale Lights in a Night Sky
  2. Clear Space, Clear Mind
  3. The Light of Vengeance
  4. A Wife's Prayer
  5. The Blessed Man
  6. The Odd Couples
  7. Noisy Neighbors
  8. An Ugly Business
  9. The Growing Ghost
  10. Something in the Water
  11. Ace Archer: Kiyomizu-Dera Temple
  12. Ace-Archer: Nijo-jo Castle
  13. Ace-Archer: Kyoto Imperial Palace
  14. Ace-Archer: Arashiyama
  15. Ace-Archer: Mount Oe
  16. Worm-ly Ways
  17. The Night Parade
  18. Restless Spirits
  19. A Fishy Story
  20. The Faceless
  21. Hidden Treasure No. 1
  22. Hidden Treasure No. 2
  23. Hidden Treasure No. 3
  24. Hidden Treasure No. 4
  25. Hidden Treasure No. 5
How Long to Complete Onimusha: Way of the Sword?

A straightforward run through the main story should take roughly 20 hours. Players who spend more time exploring and completing optional objectives can expect an average playthrough of approximately 25 hours.

Those looking to complete everything will need considerably more time. Optional missions, collectibles, and post-game activities can all extend the overall playtime.

It is also worth returning to areas that you have already visited. Additional objectives can become available later in the story, giving you new reasons to explore previously completed locations. Hidden Lion Dogs can also be found during these return visits.

The Platinum trophy requires an even greater time investment. Some rewards and unlockables are tied to Carnage difficulty, so players aiming for full completion should be prepared for another challenge.

While the main campaign can be completed relatively quickly, the optional content provides plenty of reasons to continue exploring Kyoto.

What is the final mission in Onimusha: Way of the Sword?

The final major story mission is The Clash at Rendaino. It also serves as the point of no return, so completing unfinished optional content before starting it is recommended.

Is it possible to complete side missions before finishing the main story?

Yes. Most players interested in a completionist run should finish the available optional content before beginning The Clash at Rendaino.

Can you return to previously visited locations?

Yes. Earlier areas can be revisited later in the game. Doing so can reveal additional objectives and locations, including hidden Lion Dogs.

As a Reminder, Sony dropped Physint, but Hideo Kojima’s game wasn’t canceled and will now be published by Xbox.
