The upcoming PlayStation 6 could turn out to be significantly more expensive than Sony's previous consoles. According to hardware insider Kepler_L2, the RAM and NAND memory for the upcoming console's storage alone could currently cost the company more than $680.
The insider wrote on the NeoGAF forum:
“RAM + NAND alone is over $680.”
This figure does not include the processor, graphics chip, cooling system, case, or other components. Sony would also have to cover the costs of assembly, packaging, logistics, and distribution.
At the same time, the $680 figure is not an official estimate from Sony — the company has yet to announce either the specifications or the price of the PlayStation 6.
One of the reasons for the potentially high production cost of the PS6 is the rising price of memory. Demand for DRAM and NAND remains high, particularly due to the expansion of infrastructure for artificial intelligence and data centers.
Sony has also acknowledged that rising memory prices are increasing the BOM — Bill of Materials, meaning the total cost of the components required to manufacture the device.
According to previous estimates from Kepler_L2, the total cost of PS6 components under current market conditions could potentially approach $960. However, these figures remain unofficial and could change significantly before mass production begins.
The situation is particularly interesting given Sony's position on selling consoles. The company has stated that it does not plan to sell hardware at significant losses, while fully absorbing the rising cost of components would be unrealistic.
In theory, this makes a launch price of more than $1,000 a possible scenario if component costs remain this high. However, it is still too early to say that the PS6 will definitely carry a four-figure price tag.
Sony has yet to announce the price or release date of the PlayStation 6, while the cost of memory and other components could change before the next-generation console launches.
Kepler_L2's information therefore primarily highlights the problem Sony could face: if memory prices do not fall, the company will either have to increase the price of the PS6 or absorb part of the console's high production cost.
