Grand Theft Auto VI is shaping up to be one of Rockstar’s most detailed and realistic games. Rob Nelson, co-head of Rockstar North and one of the people directly leading the project, has shared another batch of details about the ambitious title. Some of these features have already appeared in previews, but they now have confirmation from a developer.
Protagonists, NPCs and Physical Fitness
Police officers in GTA VI will have different body types. For example, during a chase involving Jason, a larger officer may become exhausted and stop to catch his breath.
Pedestrians will have more varied and physical reactions. NPCs may run up to the player and attempt to snatch a weapon from their hands. Players will also be able to take accessories from NPCs, including hats, and wear them themselves.
Animals will respond to the protagonists’ actions as well. Dogs encountered in the world can be given treats if the player has them in their inventory, while the “Study” feature will reveal a dog’s breed.
Jason and Lucia will need to maintain their physical fitness. The game will account for body fat percentage and sleep quality. Gyms will sell protein shakes and supplements to help restore or improve stamina. However, the overall life simulation will be faster and less demanding than in Red Dead Redemption 2.
The protagonists will also have different fighting styles. Jason focuses on street fighting, strength and brute force, while Lucia specializes in kickboxing and mixed martial arts, relying more on technique and agility. Their individual attributes will differ as well.
The Open World and Gameplay Mechanics
GTA VI’s story will be divided into chapters. After the opening missions, players will be free to explore the entire world, although some areas of the map will initially remain hidden by “fog.”
Player decisions will have delayed consequences and may affect how events unfold later. The character the player is not currently controlling will continue with their own routine. “Dirty” money, including marked or stolen bills, can be laundered at special establishments.
Random encounters are designed to be unpredictable. In one example, two masked robbers may become trapped inside a jewelry store and ask the protagonists for help. Players can intervene, take the robbers’ loot or simply walk away.
Calling for a personal vehicle will also work more realistically. The car will not simply appear “around the corner.” An NPC will physically deliver it, get out and leave on an electric scooter. Stolen vehicles may have little fuel or battery charge, and even a full tank will not last particularly long. Police car crashes will be more dynamic and less scripted.
During robberies, players may intimidate a cashier into revealing the location of a safe in the back room. This can increase the potential payout, but it also raises the risks. The “Focus” mode will slow down time and highlight weak points, police officers, doors, explosives and other interactive objects.
Adrenaline can be used to quickly restore energy during a chase.
Escaping a pursuit at a “6-star” wanted level will be extremely difficult, as the National Guard and special forces will hunt the protagonists.
Falls from heights and hits from stun guns will leave visible damage, scrapes and wounds on the characters’ bodies.
Newspapers and magazines in the game world can be physically opened and flipped through, while weapons will feature deep customization with individual parts that can be adjusted.
Jason and Lucia’s Relationship and the Story
Jason and Lucia may break up as a couple while continuing to work together as partners. During the story, players will face situations where they must decide whether to tell their partner something or keep it hidden. Both choices will have unpredictable consequences, and the relationship can become either romantic or completely toxic.
The “criminal profile” system is still being refined. Rather than simply dividing actions into “good” and “evil,” it will determine the player’s criminal style. Partners can also be given contextual commands, such as driving faster or hurrying up.
Additional activities mentioned include attacking rival gang territories.
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. According to rumors, the PC version could arrive as early as the beginning of 2027.
