Roblox has faced an unprecedented 70% plunge in its share price following the publication of its second-quarter financial report. The primary reason for this sharp collapse was a persistent decline in the number of active users and lower-than-expected monetization metrics.

According to Roblox CFO Naveen Chopra, the company attributes the financial shortfall to a lack of "vintage viral games" and a shift in audience attention toward new projects with lower hourly monetization. The situation was exacerbated by changes to the recommendation algorithm, which is now optimized for long-term player retention at the expense of short-term profits. The company's massive investments in the integration of artificial intelligence also played a significant role in the disappointing results.

The platform's statistics demonstrate a steady decline over the recent reporting periods:

  • Daily audience: Dropped to 123 million active players (compared to a peak of 152 million three quarters earlier).
  • Unique monthly users: Decreased by 10 million over the last two quarters and currently stands at 27 million.

Management's forecasts for the near future remain pessimistic. In the third quarter, the company expects a year-over-year decline of 14–18% due to the ongoing trend of weak monetization. Roblox also declined to provide financial guidance for the rest of the year, citing "increasing variability" in the fourth quarter. Despite the company's expectations having "changed considerably," leadership maintains its conviction in the chosen development strategy, which continues to rely on AI integration.

The player exodus may be directly related to the perception of Roblox as a cynical system designed to squeeze as much money as possible out of children. The company's reputation is also burdened by extensive concerns regarding the safety of minors on the platform, although developers have made some attempts to address these issues in recent months.
