Konami and Screen Burn, formerly known as No Code and creators of Observation and Stories Untold, have released Silent Hill: Townfall. It is the first major entry in the franchise to feature a first person perspective. The horror game takes place on the mysterious Scottish island of St. Amelie.
The game is now available on PC and PlayStation 5 for $50. However, early player feedback suggests that many consider the price too high. Like critics, Steam users praise Townfall's atmosphere and overall visual design, but have been far less positive about its gameplay.
Players describe the gameplay as boring and simplistic, while also pointing out that it barely evolves throughout the game. Between puzzles and story sequences, players are repeatedly forced to either fight large numbers of repetitive enemies or spend long periods hiding from them. Many users find both activities tedious.
One player summed up the situation by saying that Konami is once again trying to sell another indie horror game under a well known brand.
Silent Hill: Townfall currently has only 71% positive reviews on Steam. Players have also complained about poor optimization. Even those who enjoyed the game overall often believe its price is too high and say that its overall quality is nowhere near Silent Hill 2 Remake.
The game will remain a PS5 console exclusive for six months. After that period, the developers will be allowed to release Townfall on Xbox and potentially Nintendo Switch 2.
