Marvel and Sony Pictures have delivered one of the biggest box office launches ever with Spider Man: Brand New Day, which grossed an impressive $875 million worldwide during its opening weekend.
Of that total, $355 million came from the domestic U.S. market. The result far exceeded expectations, as industry analysts had predicted no more than $550 million globally, while Sony Pictures expected the movie to earn around $190–195 million in North America. For comparison, The Odyssey, which became Christopher Nolan's highest grossing film, opened with $264 million worldwide.
The superhero blockbuster has now secured the second biggest opening weekend in cinema history, trailing only Avengers: Endgame, which debuted with $1.2 billion globally in 2019.
Even before its theatrical release, the film had already broken two records. It earned $72 million from preview screenings, while its marketing campaign reportedly cost $309 million.
The movie has also been well received by audiences and critics alike, holding 90% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and an impressive 98% audience score.
