Starfield has returned to the top of the US weekly sales chart for the first time since its original release in 2023.
The surge was largely driven by the PlayStation 5 version, which accounted for the vast majority of sales. The game is estimated to have sold around 140,000 copies on the platform during its first week. Interest in the game has also increased across other platforms.
US games market analyst Mat Piscatella noted that “it's the first time Starfield has led the weekly US best-selling titles chart since the week ending September 2, 2023.” The game originally launched on PC and Xbox shortly after that date.
The PlayStation 5 release benefited from years of updates, including Free Lanes and Terran Armada. However, the launch was not entirely smooth, as players reported bugs and glitches that in some cases made the game unplayable, leading to refund requests. Several hotfixes have since been deployed.
Despite topping the charts, analysts urge caution in interpreting the result. Starfield faced very limited competition during its PS5 launch week. Alinea Analytics analyst Rhys Elliott described the 140,000 sales figure as “lukewarm,” especially compared to the 3.7 million copies sold on Steam and 1 million on Xbox, even with Game Pass affecting sales there. “In the context of a Bethesda budget and a decade-long development cycle, Starfield has likely barely broken even,” he wrote.
The game’s prospects could improve further with a potential Switch 2 version, which has not been officially confirmed but was recently spotted on Taiwan’s age ratings website, often a sign of upcoming announcements.
Bethesda has previously stated it plans to support Starfield “for years” and has long-term plans for the title. Renewed interest from new platform releases may help sustain that support, but how long it will last remains uncertain.
