Following the resolution of its dispute with KRAFTON, Unknown Worlds has resumed full development of Subnautica 2 and announced two major milestones for the underwater survival game.

Less than two months after launching in Early Access, the sequel has sold more than five million copies. At the same time, the studio released its biggest update so far, titled Adaptive Measures, introducing a wide range of gameplay improvements and new features.

One of the headline additions is a new mechanic that allows players to temporarily stun hostile sea creatures using the Sonic Resonator. While aggressive wildlife can now be incapacitated for a short time, eliminating creatures remains impossible.

The update also refines how marine life reacts when attacked with the Multi-Tool. Creatures now defend themselves only briefly before attempting to flee, schooling fish display improved behavior, and the Blight Parasite is now guaranteed to be the first creature encountered during a playthrough.

Adaptive Measures introduces:

  • Two new bio-laboratories located within the Ruined Axsums and Coral Gardens. The number of biomodifications that can be unlocked in laboratories has increased from four to six, while Creative Mode now grants immediate access to them.
  • Additional passive slots are unlocked by scanning wildlife with the Bioscanner. The interface now clearly displays both the total number of completed scans and the progress required to unlock each new slot.
  • Players can now sprint not only underwater but also while exploring land areas and moving around inside bases. A dedicated, fully remappable sprint key has been added, although the default walking speed has been slightly reduced.

Construction mechanics have also received several improvements. Larger objects can now be dismantled, the dimensions of guide rails and the vehicle platform have been adjusted, and builders can place the Fabricator and Vehicle Bay inside tighter spaces. Building outlines are now easier to see near the water's surface and around existing structures.

The update fixes a save system issue that could cause unlocked biomodifications to disappear, adds a field-of-view slider to the settings menu, updates the logging system ahead of a future interface redesign, and includes numerous optimization improvements for performance, animations, and audio.

Unknown Worlds confirmed that the next update is scheduled to arrive within the next few weeks and will focus on co-op features, including teammate revival and integrated voice chat. Future patches will continue expanding the game with new biomes, vehicles, and aquatic life.

Subnautica 2 is available in Early Access on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as on Xbox Series consoles through Game Pass. Players have responded positively to the sequel and expect it to become even larger and more ambitious as development continues.
