World of Warcraft: Forever beta caused an unprecedented surge of players on Blizzard's servers

World of Warcraft: Forever has become one of the most unusual projects in Blizzard's history. The developers took the original 2004 version of the iconic MMORPG and significantly expanded it. The game will feature more than 1,000 new quests, additional dungeons and 10 and 20 player raids, as well as the new Skyborne race, which has never appeared in WoW before. It will only be available to players who purchase one of three pre order editions starting at $30.

The level of interest in the project turned out to be far greater than Blizzard expected. Senior game designer Josh Greenfield described the number of beta participants as “the craziest numbers in 17 years of working at the studio”.

The massive influx of players also caused serious technical problems. Blizzard's server CPUs began failing, while available memory was insufficient to process all incoming data. This resulted in huge queues, and some players also found that their progress was not being saved.

Blizzard eventually managed to stabilize the servers, although doing so required a major effort from the development team. The company has been running similar tests for more than 20 years, but none of them had attracted as much attention as World of Warcraft: Forever.

World of Warcraft: Forever is officially scheduled to launch on November 4, 2026.

As a Reminder, Marvel's Wolverine Surpasses Death Stranding 2 in Sales.
