Despite growing concerns about the future of Destiny 2, Bungie reportedly explored ways to keep the game alive for years to come. However, according to Forbes journalist and insider Paul Tassi, Sony ultimately declined the proposal.

Tassi claims that Bungie presented Sony with a strategy focused on rebranding the game and adjusting its content release model. One of the key ideas involved renaming Destiny 2 to Destiny Infinity in an effort to refresh the franchise’s image and attract renewed player interest.

The studio was also considering replacing its current schedule of two major expansions per year with a single large-scale annual expansion. Bungie believed this approach could sustain player engagement without the need to develop Destiny 3. Industry journalist Jason Schreier previously estimated that a full sequel would require at least $550 million and five to six years of development.

According to the report, the Destiny Infinity concept would have required significantly less funding than creating a brand-new title. Even so, Sony reportedly chose not to move forward with the project.

Paul Tassi further stated that Destiny 3 is not currently in development and that the chances of it entering production are virtually nonexistent. He noted that fan petitions, community complaints, or even a major resurgence in Destiny 2’s popularity would be unlikely to change that situation.

For now, Bungie’s focus remains on Marathon. The extraction shooter will receive its second season on June 2 alongside a week-long free access period. The studio hopes these initiatives will help boost interest in the live-service title, particularly among console players, who have so far shown limited enthusiasm for the game.

As a Reminder, Fable Officially Delayed to 2027.
