Frustration with Game Pass is reportedly growing inside Xbox, with some employees and executives believing the subscription service has become harmful not only for the company but for the gaming industry as a whole. Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier shared these claims during a recent episode of the Triple Click podcast.
According to Schreier, Xbox head Asha Sharma has already decided against bringing future Call of Duty releases to Game Pass on launch day. He said the franchise significantly increased the cost of the subscription while also reducing traditional game sales.
Schreier added that more developers and studio leaders within Xbox now believe that launching major titles in Game Pass on day one undermines the value of premium releases.
«There are a lot of studio heads inside Xbox who absolutely hate Game Pass. They think it has destroyed the value of their games, lowered the value of games overall, and hurt the entire gaming industry because it devalues games».
Schreier believes Microsoft could eventually stop releasing first party blockbusters on Game Pass at launch. Instead, the service could focus on older or smaller titles, while major releases would return to the traditional sales model.
He also claimed that the atmosphere inside Xbox is currently tense, with employees uncertain about future management decisions and worried about potential job cuts. Schreier added that Microsoft has already paused discussions with partners about bringing their titles to Game Pass.
